A freight forwarder is an agent who handles your cargo on your behalf. However, the freight forwarder (often shorted to forwarder) is not the same as the carrier, who is physically handling your cargo. The value a freight forward brings is their expertise in the market. Additionally, through volume discounts, they will often be able to acquire space with the carrier at a lower cost than you could if you went to the carrier directly.
Freight forwarders tend to handle the majority of documentation.
While it’s not uncommon for a freight forwarder to be an NVOCC, not all freight forwarders are NVOCCs.
Resolution, Inc. incorporates Missionary Expediters, Inc. & Cargo Logistics as freight forwarding companies, and Navigation Network, Inc. as a NVOCC.
